Troubleshooting Lab Windows issues

Receiving a Change Compatibility Mode Registry Error When Launching LabWindows/CVI

Problem:

When running LabWindows/CVI for the first time after installation or when setting the compiler compatibility mode, LabWindows/CVI reports an error indicating that it is unable to modify registry keys. The error states:

“This utility could not open registry entries for the given CVI version.”

Why am I getting this error?

Solution:

The first time LabWindows/CVI is run after installation, a dialog will appear (see attached screenshot “Compatibility Mode.jpg”) indicating the compiler compatibility mode is being set. This action requires administrator privileges (not user or power user privileges) since registry keys are being modified outside of an installation.

To resolve this problem, either log in as an administrator or ensure that your user account has write access to the following parent trees in the system registry:

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\National Instruments
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\National Instruments

If above does not help, change the permissions on following tree for Users to Full Control

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\National Instruments\CVI\7.1
